Invisible balls of energy are causing hallucinations within the walled city of Old Quebec. Jack and Mojo try to locate the source of these "eyes". When a little girl with pigtails, smoking a cigar, is seen about town, Jack suspects Litte Frieda is involved. When Jack speaks to Claudine on his cell, she appears before him; when he hangs up, she vanishes.

The Eye of Van Gogh (Audible Audio Edition) Meatball Fulton ZBS Foundation Books

Jack Flanders is back in Canada, this time Quebec city. His old friend and companion Mojo Sam has called him in to investigate rolling balls of alternate perception that are entering the city. People who pass through the invisible balls find themselves looking at the world through the eyes of an artist, as if they were given the eyes of Van Gogh himself. To creative types, poets, painters and writers, it is pure euphoria. To those more grounded in reality, it is madness.

"The Eye of Van Gogh" is the third installment in the "Traveling Jack" series, directly following Do That In Real Life? This is a full-cast audio production by the ZBS Foundation, the acknowledged masters of the modern day radio play.

Dominique and Claudine return again (Claudine for real this time!) as well as a blast from Jack's past, Little Frieda with the piggy tales. Last heard in Return to Inverness, this is the first time Little Frieda appeared in one of Jack's "Travel" -series, and she doesn't trust Jack's new companions. Claudine, in particular, might just meet her match in a fellow mystical woman.

"The Eye of Van Gogh" has a different tone from some of Jack's previous adventures, being more romantic as Jack and Claudine are clearly attracted to each other. Claudine, from the other reality, keeps herself distant only appearing before Jack in a form of bi-location involving cell-phones. Little Frieda warns Jack about Claudine, but he is willing to take the risk.

Meanwhile, the rolling balls of madness are becoming a greater threat to the citizens of Quebec, as St. John the Baptist day is approaching and the city will soon be overrun by tourists whose minds are not prepared for the altered perceptions brought on by the balls. It will take all of the abilities of Jack, Mojo Sam, Little Frieda, Dominique and Claudine to find and close the gate that is letting lose these Eyes of Van Gogh.

I really enjoyed "The Eye of Van Gogh," and I like how the ZBS Foundation is connecting the shorter Jack Flanders adventures into a longer series. The introduction of Little Frieda into the "Traveling Jack" series was a nice, nostalgic touch for those of us who have been following Jack's adventures for more than twenty years!
